STC (Sound Transmission Class) – This rating was first published in 1970 in accordance with ASTM E413, and was designed to provide a performance rating for interior wall partitions against noises from speech, television, radio and office equipment. It is important to note that ASTM E413 specifically states that the STC calculation should not be used to evaluate partitions exposed to transportation noise such as motor vehicles, aircraft and trains.

EWR/EWNR (Exterior Wall Noise Reduction) – This rating was developed in 1977 by Wyle Laboratories for the U. S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration. It is similar to the STC rating, but, unlike the STC rating, it is designed to provide a performance rating for building facades that are exposed to transportation (traffic) noise.

OITC (Outdoor-Indoor Transmission Class) – This rating was first published in 1990 in accordance with STM E1332, and was designed to provide a performance rating for extrior facades and facade elements (windows and doors) that are subjected to transportation noise such as motor vehicles, aircraft and trains. The OITC rating can be assigned to specimens tested in the field and in the laboratory.

AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturer’s Association) – AAMA is a voluntary trade association that provides performance standards, product certification and educational programs for the window and door industry.

ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) – ASTM is an international, voluntary standards development organization, and is a globally trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems and services. Many AAMA Standards are directly related to or employ ASTM Standards for testing and performance of windows and doors.

NFRC (National Fenestration Ratings Council) – NFRC is a non-profit organization that administers a uniform, independent rating and labeling system for the energy performance of windows, doors, skylights and attachment products. NFRC provies fair, accurate and reliable energy performance ratings that enable architects, builders, code officials and consumers to compare the thermal performance of different fenestration products, and provides a fair and level playing field for fenestration manufacturers in the area of thermal performance.

NVLAP (National Voluntary Laboatory Accreditation Program) – Administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the NVLAP provides unbiased third-party evaluation and recognition of laboratory performance and provides technical guidance to assist laboratories in upgrading their performance.
